Occupational Hygiene Technician – Toronto Office

JOB CLASS: Technician
FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Occupational Hygiene Technician
REPORTS TO: Richard Quenneville, Director Occupational Hygiene
EXPERIENCE LEVEL: 0 – 2 years of relevant experience

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Under indirect supervision, conduct exposure assessments for chemical, biological and physical hazards, carry out indoor air quality studies, and deliver other services relating to occupational health and safety, as requested by clients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Fundamental job duties):

  • Develop assessment protocols and execute on-site work required to fulfill services requested by clients, in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, guidelines and established occupational hygiene practices.
  • Conduct site investigations to gather required quantitative and qualitative data, including visual observations, site interviews, sampling, document review and other.
  • Interpret findings, provide recommendations, and generate technical reports based on work conducted, in agreement with THEM's internal protocols and occupational hygiene practices.
  • Communicate with clients to gather required information and establish delivery of services required to meet their needs.
  • Liaise with regulatory officials, analytical laboratories, equipment suppliers and others, to achieve effective completion of assigned projects and relationship development.
  • Complete all required administrative tasks, including invoicing information and timesheets for input into tracking software.
  • Conduct any necessary laboratory work, including instrument maintenance and proper calibration, as required.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS (Incidental Duties):

  • Actively contribute to the continual growth and development of the Occupational Hygiene Department.
  • Maintain and further develop professional competency by continually improving knowledge of applicable regulations, standards and guidelines, maintaining knowledge of current and relevant literature.
  • Attending training sessions, seminars and conferences, trade shows as well as other means of professional development. (As needed)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor of Science, College Diploma or equivalent degree in Occupational Health and Safety, or related field.
  • Prior related work experience preferred, however not required.
  • Understanding of occupational hygiene principles, as well as knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including regulations made under it.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skill required to develop assessment protocols, interpret findings and provide effective recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required in order to deal effectively with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent written communication skills are required, including proven ability to generate strong technical reports.
  • Proficiency in Windows applications, and ability to read and interpret AutoCAD drawings.
  • Technical competency using various types of testing equipment.
  • Excellent relationship building skills are necessary to be able to foster and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills are necessary to plan and run a project or projects concurrently.
  • Initiative and self-motivation is required to make recommendations, take action, and work with little direction.
  • A valid Ontario Driver's License and unrestricted access to a working vehicle is required.

* THEM expect between 80-90% of a technician's time to be billable.

Environmental Technician

Location: Toronto, London, Ottawa      

We are currently seeking motivated individuals with exceptional communication and leadership skills to join our team. We require Environmental Technicians with proven interpersonal and technical skills, knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Regulations. The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, conducting hazardous substances surveys, conducting compliance audits & environmental site investigations, conducting water and soil sampling, and providing recommendations for remedial action. Environmental consulting experience is an asset but not essential.

Knowledge & Skill Requirements

  • B.Sc. degree or College Diploma in Environmental Sciences or Engineering, or related science field
  • Minimum two years experience in conducting Phase I Environmental Site Assessments and Hazardous Materials inspections is required
  • Strong leadership skills coupled with a ‘team player’ attitude
  • Commitment to professional excellence
  • Highly effective communication and report writing skills
  • Must have a valid Ontario drivers license

Desirable Assets

  • Able and willing to occasionally work during non-regular business hours, including weekends
  • Advanced degree or diplomas in environmental science or engineering field would be an asset
